The Swedish Club seeks a qualified and experienced legal professional with dedicated expertise in sanctions compliance to join our newly established Anti-Financial Crime (AFC) team. This role is critical in safeguarding the organisation against violations of international sanctions regimes and ensuring robust controls in this high-risk area. While the AFC team also addresses broader risks such as fraud and terrorist financing, this position's core focus is identifying, assessing, and managing sanctions-related exposures across our global operations.
About the Role
As a Senior Sanctions & AFC specialist, you will report directly to the Head of AFC and serve as a key contact for sanctions-related matters across our international operations. You will be involved in advisory work, training, and compliance development, working closely with both legal and operational teams worldwide.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance on sanctions and financial crime compliance to internal stakeholders.
- Monitor and assess developments in international sanctions and financial crime trends.
- Develop, implement and improve internal policies, procedures and controls.
- Conduct risk assessments and enhanced due diligence processes, including KYC.
- Support internal training efforts and build awareness of AFC risks and responsibilities.
- Collaborate with colleagues across functions and geographies to ensure effective compliance.
- Use investigation tools, such as sanctions screening and vessel tracking systems (e.g. AIS monitoring).
Qualifications and Experience
- Legally qualified in Sweden or a common law jurisdiction (e.g. England & Wales).
- At least 3 years of experience in maritime law, sanctions compliance or financial crime prevention.
- Strong understanding of the shipping industry and its exposure to financial crime risks.
- Analytical mindset with excellent communication and collaboration skills.
- Comfortable working independently and across international teams.
- Experience in sanctions related to ship trading patterns is an asset, but not a requirement.
- Fluent in English; Swedish is an advantage but not required.
Location: Gothenburg, Sweden (preferred). London or other Swedish Club office locations may be considered.
